Zirconia ceramics and Alumina ceramics: Comparative consideration of wear resistance

Wear resistance is related to all the properties of the material, and it cannot be concluded in a simple sentence.

Excluding the presence of a protective coating on the surface of the material, the wear resistance of structural ceramics is related to the following factors.

1. Mohs hardness

From this point of view alone, when the content of the main components is the same, the thickness of the ceramic will be greater than that of zirconia ceramics, and the ability to resist external pressure will be stronger.

2. Surface coefficient

The friction coefficient refers to the ratio of the friction between two surfaces to the vertical force acting on one of their surfaces. It is related to the roughness of the surface and the size of the contact surface. It is speculated that the friction coefficient of ceramics is sparse in itself, while the friction coefficient of oxide ceramics is, assuming that it is about half of that of ceramics.

3. Smoothness/surface roughness

Whether it is ceramics or oxide ceramics, according to the principle of friction, the smoother the surface, the more wear-resistant it is. The smaller the surface roughness, the smoother the surface. On the contrary, the smaller the smoothness value, the more wear-resistant the object. The smoothness of ceramics is related to the processing technology and processing level.

4. Porosity

Ceramics and oxide ceramics are both high-temperature-resistant structural ceramics. Ceramics are polycrystalline (a collection of many fine grains) materials, composed of metal and non-metal inorganic compounds. Ceramic materials are multi-phase polycrystalline materials, and their structures simultaneously contain crystal phase, glass phase, and gas phase. When the material is multi-phase, the wear resistance is also directly related to the porosity of the material.

The size of the porosity is related to temperature, air pressure, etc. When the temperature is corrected and the air pressure increases, the porosity generally increases. The pores are brought in by the raw materials themselves and are formed during the molding, drying, and firing processes.
