A diamond grinding wheel is the most commonly used grinding tool for processing ceramic materials. Diamond grinding wheels for ceramic processing are mainly divided into three types: 1. Metal bond diamond grinding wheel; 2. Resin bond diamond grinding wheel; 3. Vitrified bond diamond grinding wheel. Metal bond diamond grinding wheel has the characteristics of high bonding strength, good formability, and long service life, and is widely used. Metal bond diamond grinding wheels can be divided into electroplated metal bond diamond grinding wheels, sintered metal bond diamond grinding wheels, and brazed metal bond diamond grinding wheels according to different manufacturing methods; resin bond diamond grinding wheels often use thermosetting resins such as phenolic resin, modified phenolic resin, and polyimide as bonding agents. They have the advantages of low grinding force and grinding heat, good self-sharpening, not easy to clog, not easy to burn workpieces, easy to dress grinding tools, high grinding efficiency, and low surface roughness. However, they have poor heat resistance, fast wear, and short service life; ceramic bond diamond grinding wheels are made of diamond as the main abrasive, ceramic bond as the bonding phase, and an appropriate addition of certain auxiliary materials through sintering. They have the advantages of high hardness, good rigidity, good wear resistance, heat resistance, and good acid and alkali resistance. They are currently mainly used in the grinding of diamond tools, cubic boron nitride tools, cemented carbide, metal ceramics, gemstones, and engineering ceramic materials.
The shapes of diamond grinding wheels mainly include flat grinding wheels, double-bevel grinding wheels, single-bevel grinding wheels, cylindrical grinding wheels, cup-shaped grinding wheels, bowl-shaped grinding wheels, thin-sheet grinding wheels, etc.
The abrasive grains of the grinding wheel have a great influence on the processed surface. When the diamond grain size is large, higher grinding efficiency can usually be obtained, but the surface roughness is high and it is easy to produce edge collapse; when the grain size is small, lower surface roughness can be obtained, but the grinding efficiency is low. In addition, the grinding wheel matrix also has a great influence on the grinding efficiency and surface roughness. The resin-based grinding wheel has a low density of grinding wheel particles, is easy to wear, and has poor self-sharpening. When the grain size of 60~70# is selected, the surface roughness is high. When the grain size of 160~180* is selected, not only is the grinding efficiency low, but also the edge collapse is easy, and the surface roughness is not ideal. The copper-based grinding wheel has high grinding efficiency, small edge collapse, high surface roughness, and the price of copper-based grinding wheels is high. Electroplated grinding wheels are cheap, have high diamond density, high grinding efficiency, and small edge collapse, but have a wide range of roughness.
When a new grinding wheel is used, the surface roughness value is relatively large, but after 160 hours of use, the surface roughness value can reach about 1.6μm, and after 200 hours, the surface roughness value can reach 0.4μm. Therefore, the grinding wheel can be used for rough processing from the new hours to 300 hours, and can be used for fine processing afterwards.
