Exploring the brazing technology of high-toughness silicon nitride ceramic rods and copper

In high-performance ceramic applications, silicon nitride ceramics are favored for their good mechanical strength, high-temperature resistance, and excellent chemical stability. In particular, high-toughness silicon nitride ceramic round rods perform well in structural applications. However, the effective connection of ceramics and metals has always been one of the technical challenges in industrial applications. This article focuses on analyzing the brazing method of high-toughness silicon nitride ceramic round rods and copper, aiming to provide a reliable connection solution to meet the needs of high-temperature and high-strength applications.

Characteristics of high-toughness silicon nitride ceramics High-toughness silicon nitride ceramics significantly improve the fracture toughness of the material by improving the microstructure of the material or adding toughening agents such as carbon fiber and metal wire, making it more stable when subjected to mechanical and thermal stress. However, the welding process of this material requires special attention, because improper welding can easily lead to stress concentration and the generation of microcracks at the weld.

Technical difficulties in brazing is a low-temperature connection technology that connects two materials through filler metal (brazing). However, the brazing of silicon nitride ceramics and copper has the following technical difficulties:

1. Mismatch of thermal expansion coefficient: The thermal expansion coefficient of silicon nitride is much lower than that of copper, which makes it easy to generate residual stress at the interface due to temperature changes during and after brazing.

2. Selection of brazing filler metal: It is key to select a brazing filler metal that can not only bond well with copper but also form a strong interface bond with silicon nitride ceramics.

Recommended brazing methods and reasons

1. Selection of brazing filler metal: It is recommended to use silver-based brazing filler metal containing active elements (such as titanium). Titanium can react with silicon nitride ceramics to form a stable Ti-Si compound and enhance the interface bonding.

2. Surface treatment before brazing: The surface of silicon nitride ceramics needs to be properly roughened, such as sandblasting or chemical etching, to increase the wettability and bonding strength of the brazing filler metal.

3. Temperature control: To reduce thermal stress, a slow heating and cooling strategy should be adopted during the brazing process to avoid interface stress caused by rapid temperature changes.

Silicon nitride ceramic round rod and copper joints brazed with titanium-containing silver-based brazing filler metal showed good bonding strength in shear tests at room temperature and high temperature. Studies have shown that with optimized brazing parameters, the average shear strength of the joint can reach more than 30MPa.

Therefore, the use of active element brazing filler metal and precise temperature control can achieve reliable brazing connection between high-toughness silicon nitride ceramic round rods and copper. Although there are technical challenges such as mismatched thermal expansion coefficients, excellent joints that meet the requirements of high-temperature and high-strength applications can be obtained through reasonable brazing processes and parameter adjustments. In addition, the continuous improvement of brazing technology and the research and development of new materials will further broaden the scope of silicon nitride ceramics in industrial applications.
