Main factors of ceramic grinding- Process parameters

The grinding process parameters of ceramic parts mainly include grinding wheel grinding speed, workpiece speed, grinding depth and grinding ratio.

1 Grinding wheel grinding speed

Properly increasing the grinding speed can not only enhance the self-sharpening ability of the grinding wheel and obtain a higher removal rate, but also increase crack deformation and improve the surface quality of the workpiece. However, the grinding speed should not be too large or too small. Too large will aggravate the thermal wear of the grinding wheel, cause the bonding particles of the grinding wheel to fall off, and also cause the vibration of the grinding system, increasing the processing error; too small will increase the cutting depth of the cutting edge, causing the abrasive particles to break and fall off.

2 Workpiece speed

With the increase of workpiece speed, both the normal grinding force and the tangential grinding force increase, but the trend gradually slows down. Studies have shown that under certain conditions, when processing Al2O3 and Si3N4, the grinding force increases significantly with the increase of workpiece speed. However, when the workpiece speed continues to increase, the actual cutting thickness of the abrasive increases and the brittle peeling increases, so the grinding force decreases. The influence of workpiece speed on the grinding force is completely different for different ceramic materials and under different grinding conditions.

3 Grinding depth

When the cutting depth increases, the grinding force and grinding ratio both increase. When the grinding depth is very small, the grinding force is very small due to the micro-plastic deformation of the ceramic. Increasing the grinding depth increases the number of effective abrasives involved in grinding, and at the same time, the contact arc length increases, and the grinding force will increase linearly. When the critical cutting depth is reached and brittle fracture occurs, the grinding force decreases and fluctuates continuously, which indicates that the removal of most ceramic materials is through brittle fracture, and the grinding force mainly increases with plastic deformation. In actual grinding processing, due to the influence of other grinding conditions such as grinding wheel speed and workpiece speed, the change in cutting depth shows a certain randomness.

4 Grinding ratio

Grinding ratio is the main parameter for evaluating the grinding effect. Grinding wheel grinding is affected by many factors, but the main factors are the maximum cutting depth and the grinding cutting depth coefficient.

During the grinding process, the wear of the grinding wheel is mainly friction wear. The amount of the grinding wheel radius per unit length of grinding distance in the grinding wheel is called the grinding wheel radius wear rate.
