C.P. Titanium vs Ti-6Al-4V: Which Grade Works Better for Strip, Foil, and Sheet

Buyers sometimes frame titanium grade selection as a simple strength question. In production, it is usually a process question first. C.P. Titanium and Ti-6Al-4V do not behave the same way in forming, welding, springback, or corrosion-heavy service, so the best grade depends on how the part will be made and where it will run.

## When C.P. Titanium is usually the better tool

C.P. Titanium is a good starting point when the job values corrosion resistance, stable fabrication, and practical formability. In strip and sheet products, Grade 1 is commonly considered when the forming requirement is severe and the load requirement is modest. Grade 2 is often the workhorse option because it keeps the corrosion advantages of commercially pure titanium while offering a more useful strength level for general industrial parts.

For chemical equipment internals, heat exchanger components, welded fabrications, shims, brackets, and clean-service hardware, C.P. Titanium is often easier to justify than a high-strength alloy. The material is more forgiving in many fabrication routes, and that matters when a part has to survive bending, trimming, welding, pickling, and final fit-up without drama.

## When Ti-6Al-4V earns its cost

Ti-6Al-4V belongs in jobs where the design is limited by strength or weight efficiency rather than by corrosion alone. If the part has to carry more load in less section, or maintain stiffness in a demanding structural envelope, the alloy can make sense. But the buyer needs to remember what comes with that decision. Forming becomes less forgiving, bend radii often need more care, welding practice becomes more critical, and the supply chain for very thin or very specific product forms can be narrower.

That does not make Ti-6Al-4V difficult material. It just means the shop has to respect what it is. In my experience, trouble starts when teams buy alloy grade material for a part that never needed alloy-grade performance in the first place.

## A practical way to choose

If the part spends its life in chloride-bearing service, gets welded, or needs to be formed cleanly from strip or sheet, C.P. Titanium is often the first material I would evaluate. If the part is mass-sensitive, load-sensitive, or constrained by available section thickness, then Ti-6Al-4V deserves a hard look. The key is to compare total manufacturing behavior, not only the data sheet.

A corrosion-resistant washer, thin shim, or formed enclosure panel usually does not need the same answer as an aerospace bracket or a high-load structural detail. Treating them as the same problem is where over-specification starts.
